SNK Fans of Florida
Me and a handful of people are in the minority of saying this, but.... man, I like the direction this series just took. No hyped-up bullshit, just straight up strategic combo rushdowns. Things are fixed, and characters have changed, thus making this possibly the most balanced KOF (Daimon sponges up attacks, thus making his grabs unstoppable, and Ryo's 'Hundred Fist' now has either 'clashing properties' or is overpowered by other attacks... also, projectiles can now be countered and stopped.
+ Best. Fucking. Sprites. Ever.
+ A very fresh well balanced system, it's like KOF 95 built on KOF 97's system.
+ Balanced. What the fuck are tiers? (Ok, well if there WERE tiers... it would be like this:
Duo Lon (He's a poke character now. Like just straight up.)
+ That soundtrack sounds quite KOF-ish. You think there's not many songs but sound test includes some bonus items for the hardcore SNK fans. (The French Plaza is one of my top favorite tracks.) There's a bonus track called 'ESAKA 2008'.
+ English voices are... 'decent'. They're not Maximum Impact! There, that's a plus!
+ Game has responsive controls. The fastest I've seen in KOF history.
+ The online, despite some hiccups, is actually rather decent, and Ignition/SNK even said they're working on a patch to improve it. Don't worry, SNK's going to be building upon this game for as long as its fans are willing to put hours into the game itself.
+ Personalized victory messages. This is what the KOF is about! Those zany quotes.
+ Classic characters get new moves. Kensou, Iori (!!), and even Benimaru are the top candidates for new styles, and I must say, SNK did a great job at making THEM fresh, ESPECIALLY Iori. Flames? HAH. Reverse Freeman that shit!
- The 'Personality' of KOF has been somewhat stripped from this iteration. No personal openings, no taunts (!!), and of course no story, though it's still 'canon' (Think of this as KOF XI part 2).
- No Boss. Man. While this is kind of a 'weak cop-out', think about the fans. The fans, all they did was gripe and bitch and complain about 'SNK BOSS SYNDROME' and the second SNK gives the fans a break, butthurt happens. Meh. The way I see it? KOF XII was meant to be a social game, and not something to spend time with just by yourself. Arcade Game to the core. Shit, is this even REALLY a CON?
- Roster. At first bugged me. But I found my team and I am satisfied. To the normal fan, this is a deal breaker. To me though? Well, I found my team, so I'm set. Plus, see that 'Marketplace' option? Waiting game.
- The only major fighting game to come out this year that didn't include a 'Spec. Edition' anything at full price. Bummer, dude...
Hmmmm.... my positives outweigh the cons... biased, you say? Maybe. But then again, I'm too busy fighting matches over AND over AND OVER to notice if I am or not. My point is, SNK just FINALLY changed KOF and it's going to take some time to get everything 'up to snuff 150%'. Think of it this way - Kyo and friends just moved to a new place! Give them time to make the house keys, get the cable and electricity running and give them time to settle in. Rome wasn't really built in a day.
Anyways, I will write a full review, but it won't be for this blog, rather it will be for my friend's gaming site, so keep an eye out for that.
BY THE WAY? Drop your Gamertags if you got this game.
Luminous Kyo - my team is Kyo, Kensou and Ryo. Let's do this thing.
